Track and Field Enjoys Record-Setting Day at Colgate Invitational

HAMILTON, N.Y. \u2014 Junior All-Americans Maria Ferguson (Fairmount Heights, Md./Laurel) and Dante Myles (Hyattsville, Md./Archbishop Carroll) each turned in record-setting performances to lead the Frostburg State track and field teams at the Colgate University Class of 32 Invitational Saturday afternoon.

The Bobcat men placed ninth out of 13 teams with 40.5 points, while the FSU women were 11th out of 13 teams with 21 points. The highly competitive field featured six Division I squads.

Ferguson finished second in the 200-meter dash in a school-record time of 26.22 seconds. She shattered the former mark of 26.36 seconds set by Betty Barnes in 1989.

Junior Serena Wheeler (Baltimore, Md./Mergenthaler) ran the 55-meter dash in 7.58 seconds to finish fourth behind three Division I athletes. She also finished fifth in the 400-meter run in a season-best 62.51 seconds.

Freshman Lynnea Finch (Owings Mills, Md./Franklin) turned in a strong performance in the 400-meter dash, finishing eighth in 63.46 seconds.

The team of Wheeler, Ferguson, Finch and sophomore Katherine Scruggs (Lusby, Md./Patuxent) placed seventh in the 4x400-meter relay in 4:22.45. Wheeler led off with split of a 64.94, Ferguson followed with a 61.16, Finch added a 63.49 and Scruggs closed with a 72.47.

On the men's side, junior All-American Dante Myles (Hyattsville, Md./Archbishop Carroll) continued to dominate his competition, winning the 55-meter dash in a meet-record 6.38 seconds. He bested the former mark of 6.42 seconds set by Colgate's Charles Holland in 1996.

Fellow junior All-American Karold Gray (Bowie, Md./Southern) posted a 23.06 in the 200-meter run to place fifth, while freshman Greg Lambert (Columbia, Md./Hammond) and junior Tyque McCarthy (Bowie, Md./Central) turned in strong showings in the 400-meter run. Lambert finished third in 51.78, and McCarthy placed fourth in 52.05.

Sophomore Travis Bouldin (Greensboro, Md./North Caroline) finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 45-4.5, and he added an eighth-place showing in the high jump with a mark of 6-3.25.

The Bobcats also received top-10 finishes from Mike McGreevy (Cumberland, Md./Allegany) and sophomore Randy Belt (Upper Marlboro, Md./Patuxent). McGreevy placed eighth in the triple jump with a leap of 43-2.25, and Belt finished ninth in the pole vault with a height of 13-0.25.

The men's 4x400-meter relay continued its impressive development, finishing second in a time of 3:25.87. McCarthy (52.44), Gray (50.38), Myles (51.79) and Lambert (50.87) teamed to beat six Division I squads in the event.

"The Class of 32 Invitational was an excellent meet for us," said FSU first-year head coach Felix Moreno. "I was impressed with the performances of both teams. We're heading in the right direction, and we continue to improve and make significant progress."

Frostburg State returns to action this Saturday at the Denison University Big Red Invitational in Granville, Ohio.
