Men's Basketball Falls In AMCC Opener

PAINESVILLE, OHIO \u2014 Junior Aaron Johnson scored 32 points to lead five Lake Erie players in double figures as the Storm posted an 88-82 upset of Frostburg State Saturday afternoon at Lincoln Gymnasium.

The loss spoiled another strong outing by Bobcat senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein), who scored a career-high 35 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. Bowery has averaged 25.2 points in his last five games.

Lake Erie (7-6, 2-0 AMCC), which won for just the third time in 13 all-time meetings with FSU, opened a 44-36 advantage at the intermission behind Johnson's 19 first-half points. The Storm shot a scorching 65 percent (17-of-26) in the opening stanza.

The Bobcats (3-7, 0-1), who had won six straight against Lake Erie, turned the tables in the opening moments of the second half, hitting five of their first six shots in a 10-2 run which tied the game at 46.

However, Lake Erie countered and opened a 69-58 advantage with 9:58 to play. The Storm appeared in control with an 80-68 lead at the 5:12 mark, but FSU made another charge, pulling to within 82-76 with 2:47 left.

Junior Myro Small (Berlin, Md./Stephen Decatur) closed the gap to four, 84-80, on a lay-in with 1:04 to go, but Johnson sank a pair of free throws with 18 seconds remaining to seal the win for the Storm.

Brandon Henderson (15), Tony Tibayan (14), Mike Rustifo (12) and Nate Malensek (11) also scored in double-figures for Lake Erie.

Small posted his first double-double as a Bobcat, finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds. However, eight other FSU players combined for just 28 points.

Frostburg State will look for its first AMCC win of the season when it visits Pitt-Greensburg on Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.
