Track & Field Tackles Busy Weekend in Preparation for ECAC Championships

It was a busy weekend for the Frostburg State men's and women's track and field teams. The Bobcats competed at the New York University Last Chance Meet Friday and then at the George Mason University Invitational Sunday.

At NYU, junior Lynnea Finch (Franklin/Owings Mills, Md.) qualified for the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships in the 500-meter event with a time of 1:21.18.

At GMU, sophomore Jennifer Waskiewicz (Francis Scott Key/Taneytown, Md.) achieved her personal best in the shot put when she tossed for a distance of 13.06 and seventh place.

Also drawing attention to the Red and Black was freshman standout Anna Routzahn (Frederick/Frederick, Md.) who placed second in the high jump at NYU with a height of 1.63 meters. Routzahn has already qualified to compete in both the ECAC and NCAA Championships in March.

Sophomore Chelsea Lewis (Pike/Indianapolis, Ind.) placed 13th in the 60-meter dash at NYU with a time of 8.37, before running the 200-meter dash in 27.74. Lewis then ran the 55-meter dash in 7.66 at the GMU meet.

Freshman Andrea Dickerson (Springbrook/Silver Spring, Md.) ran a time of 8.69 in the 60-meter dash at NYU, jumped a distance of 4.34 meters in the long jump and ran the 55-meter dash in 8.03 at GMU.

Sophomore Laura Knight (Bel Air/Bel Air, Md.) placed sixth in the pole vault with a height of 2.85 meters at NYU. At GMU, in the 800-meter run, freshman Sheila Kurtz (Boonsboro/Thurmont, Md.) finished with a time of 2:42.14, while freshman Bonnie Axman (James Robinson/Burke, Va.) turned in a time of 11:19.37 in the 3000-meter run.

On the men's side, junior Brian Bonn (Glen Burnie/Glen Burnie, Md.), who won the 800-meter run at the Mason-Dixon Indoor Championships last weekend, ran the 800-meter at NYU in 2:04.02 and then in 2:01.78 at GMU.

Junior Ron Lipscomb (Northern Garrett/Avilton, Md.) attained a personal record in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:38.21 at GMU, while junior Terrell Hayes (Wheaton/Rockville, Md.) threw for a distance of 12.04 meters in the weight throw.

Also very busy over the weekend was freshman Bryan Powers (Archbishop Curley/Baltimore, Md.). Powers turned in a time of 9.62 in the 60-meter hurdles at NYU, before improving to 9.44 in the same event at GMU. Powers also ran the 500-meter dash in a time of 1:18.31.

Freshman Andy Watson (Damascus/Gaithersburg, Md.) competed in the one-mile run at both events, with his best time of 4:31.05 at NYU.

Sophomore Sid Bittinger (Westmar/Midland, Md.) also competed in the same event at both meets, but produced his best time for the weekend at NYU when he ran the 3000-meter in 9:12.72.

Sophomore Ed May (La Plata/Bryantown, Md.) led the Bobcat field in the 3000-meter run at NYU with a time of 9:04.65, while freshman Scott Yanus (Damascus/Gaithersburg, Md.) led the Bobcats in the 3000-meter run at GMU when he turned in a time of 9:19.89.

Freshman James Pruitt (Stafford/Stafford, Va.) finished with a distance of 11.31 meters in the shot put event at NYU.

"Overall, these two meets were an excellent experience for our athletesto have," said head coach Felix Moreno. "The experience of competing with some of the finest athletes has allowed them to continue to take steps toward their best performances. This team is incredibly committed and I am proud of their efforts to reach the next level."

"Several members used these two meets last weekend as key meets for preparation for the ECAC Championships this weekend. Anna Routzahn is currently ranked fourth in the country and Jennifer Waskiewicz, who was not very close as a freshman has now qualified for the ECAC Championships. Also, Lynnea Finch was very aggressive at the NYU meet to qualify for ECAC's."

"We have several athletes that are very close to qualifying, but did not quite make it. Their performances are going to set them up to make the cut for the ECAC Championships next year where I anticipate having many more participants."

The Bobcats return to action this weekend, March 5-6, when they compete at the ECAC Division III Championships before heading to the NCAA Division III Championships March 12-13 at the University of Wisconsin in Whitewater, Wisconsin.
