Men's Basketball Dumps W&J To Snap Six-Game Skid

WASHINGTON, D.C. \u2014 Senior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Einstein) scored a game-high 21 points and fellow senior A.J. Ernst (Minster, Ohio/Minster) added 16 points in 15 minutes to lead Frostburg State to a 74-54 romp over Washington & Jefferson in the consolation game of the Catholic University Pepsi Classic Sunday afternoon at the DuFour Center.

The Bobcats (2-6), who snapped a six-game losing skid, held a 31-26 advantage at halftime and pulled away by outscoring the Presidents, 9-2, to begin the second stanza.

Sophomore Chris Vaughn (Manchester, Md./North Carroll) began the spurt with five of his career-high 11 points in just his second career start.

Ernst later scored six points in a 10-2 stretch that gave the Bobcats a commanding 54-36 lead with 11:20 to play.

The Presidents (1-8) missed 12 of their first 14 shots in the second half and never got closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

FSU went ahead by as many as 22, 72-50, on a Bowery layup in the closing minutes. The Bobcats turned in their best defensive effort of the season, holding W&J to just 31.9 percent (22-of-69) shooting, including 1-of-21 from three-point range.

Bowery, who added seven rebounds and five blocks, was named to the All-Tournament Team after scoring 47 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and blocking eight shots in two games.

He now has 1,456 career points and needs just 18 to tie Ray Nelson (1,474) for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list.

Chris Houser led W&J with 10 points, while Nolan Larry added nine, well below his 17.0 average.

The Bobcats return to action on Wednesday when they visit Grove City at 7:00 p.m.
