O'Brien Named to Hewlett-Packard All-America Football Team

BROCKPORT, N.Y. \u2014 Frostburg State junior defensive lineman George O'Brien II (Mt. Airy, Md./Linganore) has been named to the 2001 Hewlett-Packard Division III All-American Football Team.

O'Brien, who was voted to the third team, is just the second Bobcat football player ever selected a Hewlett-Packard All-America.

Defensive back Russell Williams was an honorable mention honoree in 1995 and a third-team selection in 1996.

"George is certainly well deserving of this award," said FSU head coach Rubin Stevenson. "I feel he is one of the top Division III linemen in the country, and we're very fortunate to have him back for another year."

O'Brien, who also earned Atlantic Central Football Conference Defensive Player of the Year, first-team All-ACFC and third-team Don Hansen's Football Gazette All-South Region honors, led the ACFC with 18 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks and finished second on the Bobcats with 84 tackles.

O'Brien was named the ACFC Defensive Player of the Week twice during the season and took home ECAC Division III Southwest Region Defensive Player of the Week honors once. He helped FSU to a lead-best 26 sacks.

Frostburg State finished 5-4 overall and placed second in the ACFC with a 2-1 league mark.

The Bobcats won their final three games of the season, including a 30-27 overtime finale over state rival Salisbury in the Third Annual Regents' Cup at RFK Stadium in Washington.

The 24th Annual Hewlett-Packard All-American Team was selected by a panel of 30 sports information directors representing the four playoff regions in NCAA Division III.

The ballot included 423 players representing 160 of the 228 NCAA Division III football-playing institutions.
