Hot Shooting Leads Men's Basketball to Rout of Penn State Behrend

FROSTBURG, MD \u2014 Junior Pierre Bowery (Kensington, Md./Albert Einstein) scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the first half, and Frostburg State put on a dominating performance on both ends of the floor to defeat Penn State Behrend, 80-50, in a key Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference game Saturday afternoon at Bobcat Arena.

With sole possession of second place in the league on the line, the Bobcats came out red hot and hit 10 of their first 14 shots to build a commanding 26-6 lead at the 9:00 mark.

Bowery, who has led FSU in scoring in each of the last 15 games, sank six of his first seven shots and, at one point, had more points (11) than Penn State Behrend (10).

Frostburg State (11-9, 6-2 AMCC) shot a blistering 66.7 percent (16-of-24) from the field in the first half and took a 39-16 lead at intermission.

The Bobcats also controlled the boards, outrebounding the Lions, 19-6, in the first half of play and shot a season-high 59.6 percent (31-of-52) for the game.

"Our guys came out very focused and played extremely well," said FSU head coach Webb Hatch. "We played great defense and took away their inside game, and we got a lot of energy from shooting the ball so well."

Penn State Behrend (13-7, 6-3), which came into the game ranked second in the nation in scoring defense allowing 59.8 points per game, shot a dismal 6-of-21 (28.6 percent) from the floor in the opening stanza and could never recover.

The Bobcats, who extended their winning streak to a season-high four games, continued to pour it on in the second half, eventually opening a 60-30 lead on a three-pointer by freshman Kamillo Rosenthal (Munich, Germany/Catholic, Va.)) with 11:43 to play.

Frostburg State stretched its lead to as many as 31 on several occasions, and senior Reynolds Mason (Philadelphia, Pa./Norristown) punctuated the blowout with a thundering dunk that capped the scoring with 1:04 to play.

Bobcat senior Sean Brown (Baltimore, Md./North County) added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds, while sophomore Ryan Grabill (Hagerstown, Md./Williamsport) finished with nine points, seven rebounds and six assists.

Penn State Behrend sophomore James Curren was the only Lion to score in double figures, finishing with 19 points. The rest of the Lions combined to shoot just 11-of-37 for the game.

Frostburg State will visit Waynesburg College on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
